چکیده

The distance to the M supergiant Betelgeuse is poorly known, with the Hipparcos parallax having a significant uncertainty. For detailed numerical studies of M supergiant atmospheres and winds, accurate distances are a prerequisite to obtaining reliable estimates for many stellar parameters. New high spatial resolution, multiwavelength, NRAO3 Very Large Array (VLA) radio positions of Betelgeuse have been obtained and then combined with Hipparcos Catalogue Intermediate Astrometric Data to derive new astrometric solutions. These new solutions indicate a smaller parallax, and hence greater distance (197 ± 45 pc), than that given in the original Hipparcos Catalogue (131 ± 30 pc) and in the revised Hipparcos reduction. They also confirm smaller proper motions in both right ascension and declination, as found by previous radio observations. We examine the consequences of the revised astrometric solution on Betelgeuse’s interaction with its local environment, on its stellar properties, and its kinematics. We find that the most likely star-formation scenario for Betelgeuse is that it is a runaway star from the Ori OB1 association and was originally a member of a high-mass multiple system within Ori OB1a.

Letter to the Editor A comparison of Hipparcos parallaxes with planetary nebulae spectroscopic distances

The Hipparcos satellite has measured the parallax of a small sample of planetary nebulae. In this paper we consider the results for 3 planetary nebulae (PN) for which spectroscopic distances have also been determined from stellar gravities. These gravities in turn have been derived fromprofile fitting of selected hydrogen and helium lines (Mendez et al., 1988 a, b, 1992). A comparison of these ...

Spectroscopic Survey of G and K Dwarfs in the Hipparcos Catalog. I. Comparison between the Hipparcos and Photometric Parallaxes

The tension between the Hipparcos parallax of the Pleiades and other independent distance estimates continues even after the new reduction of the Hipparcos astrometric data and the development of a new geometric distance measurement for the cluster. A short Pleiades distance from the Hipparcos parallax predicts a number of stars in the solar neighborhood that are sub-luminous at a given photosp...

The structure and temperature ofBetelgeuse ' s extended

The highly extended atmospheres of evolved M supergiant stars such as Betelgeuse have complex properties which are not clearly understood, nor are the processes responsible for elevating their atmospheres to form massive cool outtows. Alf ven waves 1?4 , acoustic waves 1;2;5?7 , and radial pulsations 8 are regarded as likely driving mechanisms, which act by strongly heating the atmosphere at lo...

The Problem of Hipparcos Distances to Open Clusters: I. Constraints from Multicolor Main Sequence Fitting

Parallax data from the Hipparcos mission allow the direct distance to open clusters to be compared with the distance inferred from main sequence (MS) fitting. There are surprising differences between the two distance measurements, which indicate either the need for changes in the cluster compositions or reddening, underlying problems with the technique of main sequence fitting, or systematic er...

Hipparcos Parallaxes and the Cepheid Distance Scale

Hipparcos parallaxes have recently become available for a sample of Galactic Cepheids, and we have used these new distances to calibrate the Cepheid periodluminosity (PL) relation at six wavelengths (BV IJHK). Comparing these calibrations with previously published multiwavelength PL relations we find agreement to within 0.07 ± 0.14 mag, or 4 ±7% in distance. Unfortunately, the current parallax ...
